Mercedes to roll out Vario option on Vitos
Mercedes-Benz is set to introduce a Vario transmission option for
its lightweight Vito vans. The Vario system, being demonstrated
below during a recent Van Experience Day at the Motor Industry
Research Association (MIRA), is available as both permanent and
selectable four-wheel-drive options.
Vario systems are already available on Sprinter vans, chassis cabs
and the 814DA light truck, which has a payload allowance of up to
4.4t.
Both the 4x4 drive and rear differential lock are engaged from
inside the cab. This gives the vehicle considerable rough terrain
capability, allowing drive to be maintained even with one of the
rear wheels off the ground.
Mercedes-Benz said the option will appeal to utility and
construction companies needing to get personnel and equipment
across unmade sites. Prices for the Vario options start at about
£7,000.
