Mott MacDonald has been awarded two contracts from Yooshin Engineering Corporation, worth a total of US$2.8bn, to help in the design and build of new bridge and tunnel links in Korea.
Both projects are road crossings connecting islands to the mainland - Geoje Island in the south near Busan and Incheon Island in the north near Seoul.
The first contract is for the design review of a new 800m main span cable stayed bridge, one of the longest of its kind in the world, together with approach bridges and viaduct spans, the total length of which will be 12km.
Due for completion by October 2009, the US$1.24bn bridge will link mainland Korea with the new airport at Incheon, South Korea and will help to provide improved access to the main airport serving the capital, Seoul. The structure will have a steel deck with 238.5m high concrete towers to give 74 m clearance of deck over shipping.
The other contract is to assist Yooshin Engineering Corporation in supervising the construction of a US$1.6bn fixed link from the Korean mainland near Busan to the Island of Geoje.
The project will involve building two cable stayed bridges with main spans of 475m and 230m, and an immersed tube tunnel 3.7km long, with a total crossing length of 8.2km.
The project is due to be completed in December 2010.
