Staffordshire Council roots out culprits

Wrekin Construction is to be investigated by Staffordshire County Council (SCC), following an incident in which it accidentally destroyed seven protected trees while carrying out upgrade works on a £60,000 cycle and pedestrian path in Lichfield.

Wrekin was meant to be supervised to prevent mistakes, but the supervisor was ill on the day that workers dug through the roots of the trees with a JCB. The trees then had to be cut down for safety reasons.

SCC highways chief David Wilson said: “This is a very unfortunate mistake. We knew these trees were protected and we had gone to enormous lengths to safeguard them, including a hand-dig only policy.”

Wrekin referred all questions to SCC.
