Rohcon has vehemently denied claims that the £48m National Aquatic Centre (NAC) in Blanchards-town, Dublin, is leaking.
Dublin Waterworld (DWL), the firm that has been running the centre for two years since its completion on behalf of Campus & Stadium Ireland Development (CSID), has made repeated claims that the pool is leaking and that the Irish sister firm of HBG and Edmund Nuttall is to blame.
However, Rohcon has now gone on the offensive. A spokesman told CJ: “Rohcon
condemns recent attempts by third parties and various media reports to impugn the integrity of the building.
“These media reports have suggested there are serious structural problems with the building and that water is leaking from the swimming pools.
“Rohcon was naturally alarmed at these reports and immediately sought access to the building to carry out an inspection. Rohcon was refused entry to the building on a number of
occasions.
“The technical inspection finally commenced on 4 July, after an intervention by CSID’s solicitors. Rohcon was again refused access the following day to complete the inspection and, as a result, CSID was forced to seek a High Court order to allow Rohcon to complete its inspection.”
The spokesman added: “The technical team led by Rohcon found that there was no water
leakage through the concrete structure into the plant room as alleged, there is no water loss through the swimming pools, nor was there any evidence of subsidence. Some leakage through pipe joints and valves was detected, which is an operational matter for DWL.”
CSID chief executive Donagh Morgan said: “I’m happy to back up what Rohcon says [about the claims of leaks]. Our engineers’ (Kavanagh Mansfield) report fully supports Rohcon’s claims.”
The Rohcon spokesman insisted the contractor has been caught in the crossfire between CSID and DWL. CSID has several on-going legal actions against DWL: eviction from the NAC for multiple lease breaches; a £7m claim in unpaid VAT; and the alleged failure to maintain the building properly.
“We consider it is significant that these media reports arrive at a time when CSID is engaged in legal proceedings against DWL,” the Rohcon spokesman said. “DWL’s continued diversionary tactics are now almost laughable.”
DWL was unavailable for comment.
