New orders rise 12% in year to August


New construction orders in the year to August increased 12% to nearly £42bn, according to the latest data from the Department of Trade & Industry.

In part this was driven by a strong August, when orders were up 15% compared with the same month a year ago. Infrastructure orders were up 71% to £529m, while private commercial orders increased 33% to nearly £1bn. However, private housing orders were static, but public housing orders slipped 34%.

In the three months to August, all sectors bar private commercial (down 5%) enjoyed double-digit increases, most significantly infrastructure, which was up 59%. 

In the year to August, infrastructure orders were still up by 35%. Private industrial was ahead 24%, private houisng 16%, public housing 10% and private commercial 4%. Other public orders were static.
