Norwest Holst wins £6.9m bridge widening contract

Norwest Holst Construction has been awarded a £6.9m contract by Network Rail, the first bridge widening contract to be let as part of the Trent Valley Four Tracking of the West Coast Route Modernisation project.

The contract will expand this section of the route through Staffordshire from two tracks to four.

Work will include the reconstruction of two overbridges which carry the A513 across the current twin track West Coast Main Line electrified railway in the town of Tamworth.

The new structure is required to span the proposed four track electrified railway and comprises a single span portal bridge with a reinforced concrete deck slab and precast concrete beams supported on reinforced concrete piled abutment walls.

The new overbridge will be constructed in three stages and will require service diversions and temporary road diversions.

The contract also includes the bilateral widening of the existing railway cutting in the vicinity of the new overbridge.
