BAA selects partners for £1.5bn Heathrow East project

Airports operator BAA has selected its preferred team to work up proposals for the new £1.5bn Heathrow East terminal building project.

The team is made up of Foster and Partners, Arup and Hoare Lea & Partners as the respective architect, structural engineer and building services engineer.

Mace and Laing O’Rourke have also been appointed to provide early stage construction advice, while Doig and Smith has been selected to provide early stage commercial advice.

Mike Forster, business strategy director for BAA Heathrow, said: "These companies were selected following a thorough assessment process and they will help us to understand the key elements of the project in the weeks and months ahead.

"It is important to stress that at this stage these companies have been appointed for early design and development work only. They are working with us to assess the viability of the project in the run up to a possible planning application at the beginning of next year."

Mark Shirburne Davies, facility solutions director at BAA, said: "We have made these appointments swiftly as we need to commence early stage design and development work at the end of this month. We received high quality proposals from all the companies who we invited to tender.

"All of the proposals were carefully assessed and our decisions have been based on a number of key criteria. The selected companies are all preferred BAA suppliers: Fosters and Hoare Lea are working on multiple projects across our seven UK airports, while Arup is currently working on Terminal 5."
