H+H Celcon signs first contractor to housebuilding scheme

Subcontractor Masonry Frame Systems has joined an H+H Celcon scheme, called Rå House, to build using thin joint methods. The Kent firm is the first to join the scheme after Celcon launched the concept last autumn.

Celcon plans to train subcontractors to build a weathertight masonry shell using its thin joint blockwork walls. Marketing director Ian Exall told contractjournal.com the company is also talking to other “candidates” about training them to use the construction method.

Subcontractors will build using thin joint blocks up to the first floor, install a floor, and carry on constructing to the roof, where it will seal the building off.

Exall said: “It’s the same contractor installing the whole structure. He will hand over a weathertight shell, and then the brick layers can work on the outside while the plumbers are working inside.

“By offering a trained team, they’re involved from the start.”

He added that Celcon decided to train named companies to use thin joint after it discovered bricklayers reverting to their usual methods when on site.

Exall said thin joint is suitable for social housing and new build. He said: “Modern methods of construction aren’t just about products, they’re about processes as well.”
