Amec has been appointed by BAA to carry out the £28m refurbishment of the main runway at Stansted Airport.
Working only at night when the airport’s operational requirements are at a minimum, Amec is tasked with delivering a fully refurbished runway in just nine months. The job will involve managing a 200-strong workforce that will lay 35,000t of asphalt and 14,400t of concrete, while 1,000 runway lights will be replaced over the course of the project.
Amec has worked for BAA for many years under a long-term framework agreement. Amec is project managing the final fit-out of T5 and has previously completed five runway refurbishments for BAA. Work at Stansted starts immediately and is due to continue to the end of November 2006.
BAA head of airside operations Dave Powell said: “Refurbishing the runway at a busy, international airport, such as Stansted, presents a number of complex challenges, so we and Amec have worked together to develop a programme of works specifically organised to minimise any disruption to normal airport operations.”
