Trevor Gamble has been named as the new chair of the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) management committee.
Gamble has more than 40 years’ experience at all levels of the industry, including operating plant, and was previously on the management committee under John Gladstone. He is also a council member of the Construction Plant-hire Association and a board member of CITB-ConstructionSkills (CITB).
Several priority areas have been identified for the management committee to tackle, including reviewing its own terms of reference, the appointment of a vice chair and the creation of a forum for plant trainers. The committee must also look at the structure and requirements of the scheme and its impact on costs, as well as its quality standards, including alignment with NVQ/SVQs.
CPCS will still be operated by the CITB and intends to maintain a close working relationship with the Construction Skills Certifi-cation Scheme as an affiliate.
On his appointment, Gamble said: “The scheme is achieving its goal of raising construction industry standards. More and more clients and employers are demanding that operatives hold CPCS cards because they understand it means workers are competent and have up-to-date health and safety awareness. This is essential in meeting the industry drive to qualify the workforce by 2010.”
