Hertfordshire based Letchworth Roofing Company was fined £50,000 plus £23,000 costs for an incident involving a trainee roofer who fell eight metres through a rooflight.
23 year-old trainee, Paul Lee Jarman, suffered a fractured jaw and soft tissue injuries as a result of the accident, which took place during rooflight replacement works on a Currys Store in Erdington, on 6 January.
The fine was issued by Birmingham Magistrates Court following a successful prosecution brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Mike Ford, the prosecuting inspector for the HSE, said of the case that “simple and cost effective measures were not put in place which would have prevented the fall” and warned that companies should ensure that they take appropriate measures to provide a safe working environment for employees.
