HSE consultation into workplace transport safety proposals

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) is inviting industry comments through consultation into a proposed ‘route map’ for workplace transport safety.

Consultation documents are available on the HSE website and comments can be submitted online or by post up until 22 September.

The planned online route map is intended as a tool to help employers and workers find their way around the full range of regulations and guidelines that apply to workplace transport. It will provide best practice advice focusing on site layout, vehicle choice and management responsibilities, among other issues.

Seminars providing a further opportunity to comment on and help to shape the proposals will be held in Cardiff, Birmingham and Edinburgh in July.

Terry Rose, Head of the HSE's Field Operations Directorate in Wales and the South West, who will be speaking at the Cardiff event, said: “These events are aimed at employers and workers who might be affected by risks from vehicles in the workplace. They will provide a real opportunity to influence the way these proposals are taken forward.”

Workplace transport accidents currently claim around 66 lives each year. The HSE aims to reduce the number of incidents by ten per cent over three years, with the route map forming a vital part of its strategy.
