Steel price rises impact across sector

By Paul Howard

More sectors of the construction industry are set to feel the impact of rising steel prices after Corus announced £25 per tonne increases for hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel and galvanised products.

The new prices, the third increase this year, will come into play on 1 October and will mainly affect bridges, infrastructure products and heavy plate girders.

Demand in the construction sector and tough market conditions were to blame for the lat- est rises, said a Corus spokesman.

The announcement coincides with the publication of a UK structural steel market development report from MBD forecasting a 10% real term growth over the next five years.
