Almost a third of construction businesses were looking to hire new recruits last year, according to a new report from Jobcentre Plus.
In 2005, 31% of companies were on the look out for new faces - up 2% from 2004 levels. And vacancies in the industry accounted for 3% of total vacancies throughout the UK.
The report also shows that smaller firms were the most active on recruitment, but larger and medium-sized organisations posted the greatest number of vacancies.
Commenting on the survey, employment minister Jim Murphy claimed it "reveals the current strength of the UK labour market. The number of companies looking to recruit new staff is on the increase at a time when employment is at record levels".
