Wimpey lands £48m Newport waterfront job

George Wimpey has emerged as preferred developer for a £48m waterfront scheme at Newport, south Wales. High-quality design and sustainability figured high on the Welsh Assembly's list of selection priorities for the Rodney Parade deal.

The project includes around 480 one- and two-bedroom homes in buildings ranging from four to 14 storeys, plus traditional houses. A £2m flood defence project also forms part of the development. This involves raising land adjoining the Rriver Usk and constructing a riverside walkway to provide additional protection for around 4,000 homes. The development will be linked to the city centre via a pedestrian bridge and also features shops and public spaces. Provided Newport City Council rubber-stamps the deal, work on site is scheduled to kick off next spring and will take approximatelyaround four years to complete.
