Castle Cement worker loses arm at factory

A man has had his arm ripped off in an accident at Castle Cement's factory at Ketton, Rutland.
The man, who was working as a contractor at the plant, got his arm caught in a conveyor.

The accident happened only days after a 150t silo, filled with cement clinker, crashed 10m, demolishing walkways as it fell, landing only a few feet away from where six men had been working.

The incidents happened just weeks after six maintenance staff were laid off. David Bagshaw, general manager of the works, said: "We can confirm that Castle Cement has had two incidents in the past two weeks, but firmly believe that this is in no way related to the earlier redundancies of maintenance staff. Safety has, and always will be, our paramount concern."

The Health & Safety Executive is investigating.
