DTI reports 3.5% rise in new firms

Despite a significant number of high-profile collapses and several mergers last year, the number of firms operating in construction increased by 3.5% overall.

According to data included in the Department of Trade & Industry’s (DTI) Construction Statistics Annual Report 2006, the number of businesses operating in construction increased from 176,403 in 2004 to 182,644 in 2005.

The greatest surges were witnessed in the four to seven staff and eight to 13 staff categories, both up 6%. The number of companies with 115 or more staff fell from 843 in 2004 to 825. There were 10 fewer firms in the 600 to 1,199 category than in the year before.
