Grant scheme aims to reduce landfill waste

Government recycling body WRAP (the waste and resources action programme) has launched a grant scheme for recycling infrastructure for construction waste.

The aim of the project is to stimulate investment and significantly increase the collection, segregation, recovery and recycling of materials, in particular non-aggregate fractions, stemming from construction and demolition sites.

“Around 30 million tonnes of construction waste goes to landfill each year and contractors are being encouraged to reduce waste and be more resource efficient.

“This capital competition will help waste management contractors provide the infrastructure and facilities to allow substantially more recycling of waste and result in less disposal to landfill,” said a WRAP representative.

The deadline for applications is midday on Monday 27 November. An application document is available from the WRAP website: www.wrap.org.uk.

■ Brand & Rae, specialist manufacturer of construction products containing recycled materials, said it owes the success of its recycled-glass concrete to help from WRAP’s business support service. Help included facilitating £315,000 of funding and advice resulting in a trademark and patent for the product.

“We now see that having a trademark is very important, but we would not have considered going down this route had it not been for the support offered,” said managing director Gary Bell.
