Industry body launched to combat HAV

OPERC (Off-highway Plant and Equipment Research Centre) at Loughborough University has instigated a new industry body for plant hirers called the Major Hire Companies Group (MHCG). The aim of the group is to help solve the growing problem of hand-arm vibration syndrome.

Initial members include A-Plant, Brandon Tool Hire, GAP, Hewden, Hire Station, HSS, Martin Plant Hire and Speedy Hire, with further companies also expressing an interest.

Its immediate aim is to establish a standard system for measuring an operator’s exposure to hand-arm vibration and agree and publish guidance on minimising workers’ exposure.

At its first meeting, MHCG members agreed that all hand tools should be independently tested and the results made available to the industry free of charge. Its members agreed to share information or best-practice documentation and commissioned a new guidance document.

The MHCG said it does not intend to compete with other trade associations or other industry working groups, but to make a positive contribution to the ongoing work.
