Fastline has won a trackside plant hire contract worth around £5m with Metronet Rail for its London Underground operation. Metronet previously suffered a number of engineering overruns due to plant breaking down with no replacement available.
The ontrack machinery supplier, a subsidiary of Jarvis, has already invested £1.5m on plant for use on the contract.
Fastline has also set up five dedicated ServiceMaster vehicles based in a west London depot; these can reach any worksite operated by Metronet within one hour, and can mobilise within 15 minutes at any time of the day or night.
Metronet hopes that the new arrangements will reduce overruns, and prevent staff from over-hiring plant “in case something goes wrong”.
