Consumer opinion poll rates construction highly

Industry figures have given a cautious welcome to the results of an exclusive NOP survey, commissioned by CJ, to find out consumer attitudes to construction (see p23). It is thought to be the first research of its kind.

The poll of almost 1,000 members of the public produced largely positive findings: 45% of people thought that construction workers achieved better job satisfaction compared with other industries, and 42% reckoned pay was better. Some 85% said construction workers provided a valuable contribution to society.

"It's good to see that the majority of respondents think construction offers better job satisfaction, benefits and career prospects than other industries," said Sir Michael Latham, chairman of ConstructionSkills.

"The results here are significant, because they indicate the majority of people see that a career in construction can be a really positive choice," said Rick Willmott, chief executive of Willmott Dixon.

Julia Evans, chief executive of the National Federation of Builders, said: "I'm pleased such a lot of people recognise construction as a great industry, which can offer a diverse career and the chance to make a really worthwhile contribution to society."

However, the poll also showed that the industry still has work to do to shift traditional stereotypes. Barely one in 10 women said they would ever consider working in construction, and 44% of respondents thought working conditions were worse than in other industries. A third thought construction workers were sexist.

"Much still needs to be done to show what a variety of jobs there are in construction for women - and the contribution women can make," said Sandi Rhys-Jones, a non-executive director at Simon Group, which is aiming to make 50% of its workforce female by 2020.

"It is possible to create a virtuous circle here," she added, "as there is evidence that women on site are more prepared to speak out about conditions than men."

Encouragingly, the poll showed evidence that the industry is starting to shift one its biggest 'blights' - the perception that it is dangerous: 41% of people thought construction was safer than other industries.
