According to sources, Fitzpatrick looks to have done its homework on a £20m education-sector deal on the south coast.
Insiders said that the contractor is emerging as the favourite to undertake the redevelopment of Highbury College's Cosham campus in Portsmouth.
This means expulsion for the three other hopefuls - Norwest Holst, William Verry and local contractor Warings.
The task centres on the design and construction of a new multi-storey college on the present campus site to include facilities such as teaching areas, a sports hall, library, workshops and offices.
The college is expected to officially name its preferred contractor soon, with work on site due to kick off later this year.
The turn-round time for the project is approximately 18 months.
