Bovis Lend Lease was the star performer in April, making it not just two months in a row at the top of CJ50,but its third win out of the four months so far this year.

The key to Bovis’s secret was retail – more specifically a £285m retail-led, mixed-use development in Cardiff for the St David’s Partnership – a joint venture between Land Securities and Capital Shopping. The 92,900m2 scheme will be anchored by a John Lewis store and will also include, restaurants, leisure space and 300 residential units.

The firm also won a further £31m contract for more shops in Cardiff, again for Land Securities. Balfour Beatty moved up into second place with civil engineering work providing its biggest haul. Its principal award in this sector was a £36m PFI infrastructure deal for Derby City Council.

Laing O’Rourke moved up five places to clinch third place after picking up more than £100m apiece in public sector and private commercial work. HBG shot up 10 places boosted by a brace of education projects in the shape of an £84m Building Schools for the Future contract for Solihull Metropolitan Council and a £30m deal for Anniesland College in Scotland.

Kier eased up one place with the majority of its 46 contracts coming from the private commercial sector, while Interserve zoomed up 15 places thanks to three contracts: a £35m infrastructure contract for Interserve Defence in the South East; and two schools worth £15.7m and £16m, both for Leeds City Council.

Skanska climbed an impressive 20 places on account of its private commercial wins, while Leadbitter was a new entry at eight following two residential wins in Stanhope, County Durham: a £39.2m scheme for Gleeson Homes and a £27m scheme for Chrysalis (Stanhope).

Norwest Holst saw its performance boosted this month by a £36.3m contract for British Nuclear Group at Sellafield and an £18.4m industrial
scheme for Prologis Developments at Avonmouth.

Galliford Try made it into the top 10 thanks to two substantial office-led schemes: a £33m project in London for One Lothbury and a £32m office and residential scheme in Reading, Berkshire for The Mildmay Partnership.

Rok slipped back from March’s high point of second to 11th, but picked up an £18.3m residential scheme for Hyde Housing Association in London. Wates moved up eight places to 12th after clinching a £24.6m residential scheme for Birmingham City Council and a £15m project for HM Prison Service at Rochester in Kent.

Other substantial wins in April included: Bowmer & Kirkland’s £39m office scheme at Houghton-Le-Springs for Arlington Business Parks and a
£15.7m office project in Sheffield for CTP St James; Carillion won a £19.3m commercial scheme in Romford, Essex, for Pickenham; Rydon secured a £19.8m hospital project in Devon for Teignbridge NHS Primary Care Trust and a £16.8m school project in Middlesex for Bishop Ramsey School.

Willmott Dixon secured two education schemes: a £21.9m scheme for the University Campus Suffolk and a £19.8m college for the Royal Borough
of Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey. Miller bagged a £26.9m deal with Dumfries & Galloway College in Scotland, while ISG InteriorExterior
won a £16m residential scheme in Maidstone, Kent, for Raven Audley Court.

Finally, Renew picked up a £25m scheme for British Nuclear Group at Sellafield and Inspace won a £20m residential project in Slough, Berkshire
for A2.
