Construction union UCATT has written to the government to oppose a move back to voluntary disciplinary and grievance procedures “in the strongest possible terms”.
The government plans to move away from the current statutory laws because of an “increase in the number of disputes needlessly reaching a formal stage.”
UCATT said: “Prior to the introduction of the statutory right, the grievances of UCATT members were usually ignored. The introduction of a statutory code highlighted the weaknesses of the previous voluntary system.”
UCATT general secretary Alan Ritchie added: “If employers want to reduce the number of employment tribunal cases then their best avenue is to apply fair and reasonable employment practices.”
