Construction Charity 5s Football Tournament

By Emma Penny

This year's Construction Charity 5s event saw a record 57 teams battle out a very competitive day of football at the Goals Wimbledon soccer centre. Bright skies and soaring temperatures added to the gladiatorial atmosphere.

It took nine matches for eventual Cup winners M Holleran to battle through the group stages and knock outs to win the competition for the second year running, with a 2-0 victory over Skanska – Bristol Schools. Holleran Captain Michael McDaid ,said that although they won all of their games, “this year was much harder, with a higher standard of football throughout.”

The event is run in association with Hays Construction, Contract Journal and organised by KBC Special Events. Each year a significant charity donation is raised for the Lighthouse Club, the construction industry charity, and this year it was presented with two cheques; one for £15,000 from Hays Construction and an additional £5,000 from competition sponsor Skanska.

Skanska had a very successful day on the field, with one team in the Cup final and another, Skanska SRW, winning the plate competition with a very close 1-0 victory over Alpha Construction.
