ODA signs Olympic Stadium deal with Sir Robert McAlpine

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sir Robert McAlpine for construction of the Olympic stadium.

Talks began last October when the contractor was confirmed as the preferred bidder. As the sole name in the frame, Sir Robert McAlpine reportedly tabled an opening bid of £630m.

A debate followed about the virtues of negotiating such a large job with a single contractor, which it was felt could name its price.

ODA chief executive David Higgins said: “This is an important step forward in the delivery of the flagship venue for the Olympic Park. I have every confidence that the designs we unveil later this year will be a worthy stage for the 2012 Games.”
