Crane drivers pledge to stamp out victimisation

Crane drivers will demand an end to victimisation and intimidation at a major industry safety summit due to start tomorrow (Thursday 8 August).

The Strategic Forum-organised meeting will hear how drivers are routinely kicked off jobs if they raise safety fears.

Leaders of the United Crane Operators' Association are calling for increased protection for drivers in the wake of a series of crane accidents, which has prompted the summit.

Chairman John Batey said: "On site, if you start bringing up safety concerns then very quickly you are described as 'not gelling with the client' and find yourself off the job."

The summit will bring together contractors, hire companies and drivers to discuss ways of improving the sector's safety record.

Leaders of the Construction Plant-hire Association will call for better communication to site operatives about safety legislation.
