The main contractor on a Manchester site where a Polish builder was killed last week was served with a trio of improvement notices on a neighbouring job in May, CJ can reveal.

Jan Tobolski, 47, died after a metal girder fell on him during construction of the £35m 22-storey residential Sarah Tower in the city centre.

BS Construction (BSC) was issued the notices following a Health & Safety Executive (HSE) visit to the nearby Sarah Point development that noted concerns over lifting methods, risk assessments and edge protection.

The notices ordered the contractor to improve its safety standards and were all complied with on the job.

A BSC spokesman said: "As a matter of course, we are co-operating fully with the police and the HSE's inquiries into this incident, and cannot comment further until the appropriate investigations have been made."

Two workers were also seriously injured in York last week when they fell 9m out of the basket of a truck-mounted access platform after it was hit by a passing lorry.
