Five firms are swotting up for a £20m to £22.5m Building Schools for the Future (BSF) deal in the West Country.
The Pathfinder Torquay Community College project has attracted Carillion, Kier, Interserve, Leadbitter and Cowlin.
Torbay Council is expected to award the contract towards the end of October and that will be followed by a 16-week lead-in detailed design period.
Enabling works are due to kick off on site at the beginning of next year, with the new college opening within two years.
The new facility will be built on the site of the existing college, which will be demolished when the new building is finished. The new college will span around 9,770m2 and will range from single to three-storey.
