Health & Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors issued 31 prohibition notices to stop work on 86 refurbishment sites in South Yorkshire in just two months, it was revealed this week.
The inspections took place in July and August in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley and the Meadowhall shopping centre.
The figures for the region are the first to be released as part of the HSE's national initiative called 'Trips and Falls in Construction 2007'.
The HSE said that despite being well-known risks throughout the industry, issues over working at height, good order and electrical safety made up the majority of enforcement notices.
