A construction worker has been found dead at the bottom of a lift shaft in offices in central London, it has emerged today.

The unnamed man, who worked for specialist joinery and fit-out contractor Swift Horsman, was found in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A Metropolitan police spokeswoman said officers were called to St Catherine’s House, 14 The Kingsway WC2 at 4am yesterday. She said the man "appeared to have fallen from height".

The police and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are conducting an investigation, and a post mortem is expected to be conducted at Westminster Coroner’s Court today.

A spokesman for Swift Horsman said: "I can confirm that we suffered this horrible accident yesterday." But he would not comment on the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

He said the company would be helping police and the HSE with their enquiries.
