Newspaper round-up: 29 August

The Financial Times, TelegraphTimes and Independent report on a bid by Ireland-based materials supplier CRH for Tarmac. Confirmation of its interest came as the group announced interim results that saw turnover rise 20% to £9.7bn.

The Independent reports on a 12-metre tunnel that was dug through soil and rocks in an attempt to raid a bank cash machine. Construction workers accidentally uncovered the the tunnel, which had been built with scaffolding and wooden poles.

The Telegraph reports on a call by Government inspectors to lift green-belt restrictions in south-east England in order to build an extra 3,100 homes a year.

The Financial Times, Times and Telegraph report on the appointment of investment bank Rothschild to value the failed tube infraco Metronet. The valuation is reportedly set to conclude by the end of September.

The Financial Times reports on the appointment of Australian contractor Multiplex to build the UK's tallest skyscraper. The £500m fixed-price contract is for the Pinnacle tower in London's Bishopsgate.
