Worker crushed to death on Takuma site

A construction worker has been crushed to death by a falling piece of steel weighing 2.5 tonnes at a site in Berkshire.

The 37-year old from Scotland was killed at the waste incinerator construction site on Wednesday.

Main contractor on the £180m project is Japanese firm Takuma. The client is a joint venture company, Lakeside Energy. Work started at the site in 2006 and the company said that the only other accident had been when a man sprained his ankle.

The deceased, Colin Dickson, worked as a crane installer with Kone Cranes, which is subcontracted by Takuma.

The site will reopen today (Friday) after the Health and Safety Executive completes its investigation.

When completed, the plant will have a capacity of 400,000 tonnes per annum and will assist local councils in meeting their landfill diversion targets.
