Barratt to build 900 homes

A massive regeneration project planned for south London has reached a crucial stage with the appointment of Barratt Homes to unlock the potential of the Canada Water area.

The deal, for Southwark Council and its development partner British Land Canada Quays, covers the first phase of the scheme at Rotherhithe.

Barratt will develop around 900 homes centred around a new civic square and retail district.

A detailed planning application is being worked up for the initial tranche of around 250 homes and Southwark's planners are expected to consider the proposals early next year.

The full-blown masterplan for the area includes 2,800 homes, leisure facilities, offices, a landmark library and new public spaces.
