Corus radiation detector adapted for use on sheep

By James Stagg

Sheep in upland areas of Cumbria, North Wales and parts of Scotland are being tested for radiation using detection systems that were originally developed by Corus to prevent contaminated metal entering its steel production sites.

The Food Standards Agency has monitored the sheep since radiocaseium was deposited over part of the UK after the Chernobyl accident in 1986. It is now using 40 modified Redeem radiation detection systems to observe their health.
