Cemex gets the go-ahead to double tyre use

By James Stagg

The Environment Agency (EA) has granted Cemex a permit to double the use of tyres as part-replacement for coal at its Rugby Works.

It can now increase the use of tyres to 25% of fuel for the kiln after a period of record performance, with data showing a reduction in emissions of up to 30%.

The tyres increase follows the granting of permission to trial Climafuel, another waste-derived fuel. In the future, tyres and Climafuel could replace up to 55% of the fuel used to heat the kiln, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the plant.

Cemex plans to gradually increase the use of tyres with immediate effect, and once the trial is complete, Climafuel will be introduced in a separate trial.
