Laing O'Rourke: demolition pictures on new offsite factory site

By Emma Penny

Laing O'Rourke has made a start to its new offsite manufacturing plant near Worksop in Derbyshire with a spectacular demolition job.

The demolition of the 42 metre high concrete silo on the former colliery and Baker refractory at Steetley, Worksop, marks the start of a huge redevelopment on the site.

The tower – once used for dry storage of raw materials for the brickworks - was one of the few remaining structures on the site which, over the next 12 months, will be transformed into the UK’s most advanced manufacturing facility of it type, incorporating state-of-the-art technology and creating up to 270 new jobs.

The facility will manufacture a range of concrete construction products, including walls, floors, columns and beams which will be used on Laing O'Rourke's projects throughout the country.

The explosives which had been packed into the base of the crumbling tower took just seconds to reduce it to rubble, breaking one of the last links with the site’s heavy industrial past and heralding the dawn of its new hi-tech future.
