To coincide with the introduction of the new MEWP categories on 1 January, the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) has published a poster explaining the changes which bring the cards into line with manufacturing standards.
Static vertical lifts are now classified as 1a and static booms (which include self-propelled booms with outrigger plus van and truck mounts) are now category 1b. The mobile vertical category (3a) includes scissor and vertical personnel lifts while self propelled booms come under category 3b and a Special category has been added for specialist machines.
Other categories such as mast climbing, telehandler platforms, insulated aerial devices and loading/unloading remain unchanged as does the harness use and inspection and MEWPs for managers. PAL cards with the old categories will continue to be valid while those trained or re-trained will be issued cards with the new categories.
Each of the new categories is illustrated on the A2 poster to help managers familiarise themselves.
