Concrete is a construction material that consists of cement as well as other cementitious materials such as fly ash and slag cement, aggregate and chemical admixtures. The cement industry contributes £775 million annually to the UK economy. It operates 14 plants and produces around 12 million tonnes of Portland cement a year, which represents about 90 % of the cement sold in the UK. There are four major manufacturers: Castle Cement, Cemex, Lafarge Cement and Tarmac Buxton Lime & Cement.
