Skanska is a large Swedish construction group which has operations throughout the world. This page provides an overview of the Skanska's UK construction activities.

Skanska UK has grown its construction turnover steadily in recent years to close on £1bn. The group’s forward orderbook has a total value of £1.8bn.

Skanska UK has sought to make its niche in the UK construction market by undertaking large complex projects that call for a strong design input element and where, as a result of all this, profit margins are above average.

The company’s overall goal is to generate customer and shareholder value. Projects are the core of Group operations and value is generated in well-implemented and profitable projects. Generally, there are several thousand ongoing projects.

Skanska is a local player in many countries. Primary markets are the Nordic region, the U.S., United Kingdom, Central Europe and Latin America.

The Group’s operations are based on local business units, which have good knowledge of their respective markets, customers and suppliers. Skanska has constructed the new public hospital in Malta, a project which cost around $USD 1 billion.

Derbyshire Royal Infirmary (DRI) & Derby City General Hospital (DCGH)

In this major new health development in Southern Derbyshire, UK, Skanska ID holds 25% of the company that is redeveloping and remodelling an existing hospital to create a new 1,159-bed acute hospital and specialist care diagnostics centre.

This new hospital combines the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary (DRI) and the Derby City General Hospital (DCGH) via construction of a new building and a 40-year concession. Many of the facilities have already been delivered, with the remaining buildings due for completion in 2008.

Midlothian Schools

The Skanska-led development Midlothian Schools PPP2 – Midlothian’s second education PPP – will provide eight new primary schools in the area, replacing old buildings and combining existing schools in new locations. In addition, the SPC, Midlothian Schools Ltd, holds a 30-year operating contract for a broad range of services.

The first two schools, Moorfoot and Tynewater, were successfully handed over to Midlothian Council in October 2007, with the remainder following early in 2008.
