Airports operator BAA has selected Balfour Beatty for its £350m Midfield Pier project at Heathrow Airport.
The scheme will complement the proposed
Heathrow East Terminal and will be constructed in three phases. Scheme design was completed at the end of 2007 and construction work will start this spring.
Phases 1 and 2, the northern and mid sections, will be built between 2008 and 2011. These phases are worth approximately £350m and include a cut and cover tunnel linking Heathrow East with the Midfield Pier. Passenger transfer travellators and cut and cover tunnels for a track transit system will also be built.
A remote passenger transfer stand may also be included in the first two phases of the project, which would add a further £78m to the contract.
Phase 3, which would begin following the completion of the previous two phases, comprises a further southern section. This phase is expected to cost around £100m.
Balfour Beatty is one of BAA's preferred suppliers for its complex building works programme.
