Sustainable construction covers a multitude of disciplines. High on the list of priorities for any environmentally aware construction is the use of energy.
The revised Building Regulations Part L (conservation of fuel and power) is a good starting point for considering energy efficiency:
The BRE has set up a mechanism to assess the environmental performance of any type of building. BREEAM buildings are given a standard by which their environmental credentials are judged.
For housebuilding, the standard by which homes were judged was known as Ecohomes. This has now been superseded by the Code for Sustainable Homes.
