Low Emission Zone comes into force

By Colin Sowman

The London Low Emission Zone (LEZ), which covers most of the area within the M25 comes into force today (4 Feb).

Diesel engined trucks over 12t, that were first registered before 1 October 2001, will be subject to a charge of £200/day for using the roads within the LEZ.

From July 2008 vehicles between 3.5t and 12t will also be subject to the charge.

Some older vehicles with cleaner engines are exempt and owners of older vehicles can avoid the charge by retrofitting their fleet with diesel particulate filters.
