Carillion overview

Carillion was created in 1999 as a result of Tarmac’s decision to demerge its aggregates business from its construction wing. The former kept the existing name of Tarmac, leaving construction with opportunity to settle on a new name. It chose Carillion.

Carillion's group chief executive is John McDonough (pictured), who was appointed to the role in 2001.

Carillion is currently working on the giant Allenby Connaught project, a £1.2bn PFI barracks scheme for the MOD, in joint venture with Kellogg Brown & Root. Carillion has also been selected to build the London 2012 Olympics media centre.

In January 2006, Carillion doubled in size as a result of the acquisition of Mowlem. Two years' later, Carillon acquired another rival contractor, Alfred McAlpine.

Carillion was placed third in the 2007 Contract Journal Construction Top 100, and 10th in the 2007 Contract Journal CJ50 table, which measures forward order books.

Carillion's full year results for 2007 showed turnover at almost £4bn (2006: £3.5bn), and a pre-tax profit of £94m (£68m). Carillion now employs over 50,000 people.
