Product manufacturers are drawing-up a programme to prove they get raw materials from responsible sources.
Leaders of the Construction Products Association are keen for a standard framework to prevent a plethora of schemes springing up.
The timber industry is currently the only sector covered by a sourcing policy.
Association environmental policy advisor Jane Thornback said: "Clients, contractors and designers are all now demanding information on the sourcing of the products used in buildings. As such, it is imperative for industry that there is a publicly available independent standard against which products can be certified."
The association will now be working with BSI, in collaboration with BRE, to develop a framework for responsible sourcing schemes.
