An overview of construction company Sir Robert McAlpine, including: latest news about Sir Robert McAlpine; details of the operations of Sir Robert McAlpine; and information about its financial performance.
Sir Robert McAlpine is one of the ten largest UK construction groups. Until recently it could claim to be the UK’s largest privately owned construction group, being slightly ahead of Miller.
Everyone working in the construction industry recognises the company by its trading name of Sir Robert McAlpine though it is actually registered at Companies House as Newarthill.
Sir Robert McAlpine’s name has been covered in glory in the past year thanks to its performance on one particular project – the Emirates Stadium, the rather fancy title for the edifice that is home to a football club called Arsenal.
The Emirates Stadium was handed over “on budget and ahead of programme” says the group. Given the muddle that almost every other stadium builder has got into, most notably at Wembley where Multiplex suffered a £193m loss, the result is that Sir Robert McAlpine was given an unopposed run at the main stadium for the 2012 London Olympics. The Olympic stadium budget stands at £500m.
The recent past hasn’t all been plain sailing for Sir Robert McAlpine, though, as the muddles of the £1bn Dudley Hospital PFI contract show. The group racked up a total hit of £100m over a period of three years. But at least that is now history and Sir Robert McAlpine is back into profit.
Newarthill’s latest annual results show a turnover of £1.3bn and a pre-tax profit of £53m which represents a profit margin of 4%.
Separate results published in the name of Sir Robert McAlpine show a different picture. There was a lower margin of 1.7% with turnover of £900m generating a pre-tax profit of £36m.
