Chelsea Football boss Roman Abramovich has splashed out £80m to buy the world’s biggest drill.
Measuring 20m in diameter, it is almost a quarter wider than its nearest rival, a 15m drill bought by China to build a tunnel under the Yangtze.
The Russian billionaire is believed to be planning to build a tunnel linking Russia and America under the 88km wide Bering Strait, according to the Daily Mail report.
The drill will take two years for German firm Herrenknecht to build, while a tunnel under Russia is predicted to take 10 years to complete.
The Daily Mail reported that such a tunnel would repay construction costs by stimulating up to 100m tons of freight traffic each year and supplying oil, gas and electricity to North America from Siberia.
