In an amendment to the housing and regeneration act that is being tabled today, sustainability is to be given the same level of importance as the supply and quality of housing, according to the Financial Times.
The shift coincides with the first day in office of Sir Bob Kerslake, head of the new Housing and Communities Agency (HCA), who has been given the responsibility for the government's housing agenda.
Kerslake believes that sustainability is vital to avoid new developments being little more than a short-term fix.
