Galliford Try has lost out to Land Securities Trillium and Catalyst Education in the race for Birmingham City Council's £820m Building Schools for the Future (BSF) deal.

As one of the largest BSF schemes in the country, Birmingham will rebuild or refurbish all 76 of its secondary schools and six special schools over the next 10 years.

The first phase worth £140m will redevelop 10 schools by 2010.

Land Securities Trillium and Catalyst Education will continue to refine four sample designs in the next phase of the bidding process.

Sylvia McNamara, director of transforming education at Birmingham City Council, said: "We are determined to ensure that teaching and learning drive the building and procurement process.

"We now look forward to receiving further detailed applications from the two remaining bidders that have reached the next stage of the bidding process in Birmingham."
