Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud has blamed his own show for encouraging a boom in building boring “white box” homes.
The Channel 4 presenter said the series was partly responsible for the plethora of similar looking modernist homes around the country.
He told Radio Times: “We’ve had a rash of applications for designs that five years ago we’d have rushed to film – white, rendered, rectangular boxes with punctured projections, wood-clad or slate-clad with some glass.
“The other thing we have unduly promoted are green oak-framed buildings – I don’t want to touch another bloody green oak-framed building if I can help it.”
He said he feared people were no longer personalising their homes but designing them to make more money, reported the Daily Telegraph.
